Amityville News on the Latest Entry.
Amityville The Awakening is an upcoming release to be distributed by Dimension Films, starring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Bella Thorne, which will be the latest entry in the longstanding horror franchise about the most infamous haunted house in America. The release date has been pushed back at least twice now, with a tentative theatrical release scheduled for January 2017.
The plot centers around single mother Joan (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who moves Belle (Bella Thorne), her little sister Juliet, and comatose brother James into a new house, which is close to the best neurological center in New York. James begins to miraculously recover and Belle begins experiencing shocking nightmares. What Belle isn’t told by her mother, is that the house is the site of the DeFeo murders in the ’70s and they’ve just moved into the Amityville Horror house.
The history behind the release is filled with bumps and bruises. Announced in 2011 by Dimension Films and Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious, etc) the movie was initially to be called Amityville: The Lost Tapes and be in the found footage format. The project was stalled, scrapped, and then in the summer of 2014, a trailer re-titled Amityville The Awakening was released, with a different storyline and format.
Slated for early 2015, the release date was pushed back again to April 2016 (see the posters), and now is set for January 2017.
While I’m not sure whey the release date has been pushed back so many times, my guess would be that there have potentially been scheduling conflicts regarding reshoots, marketing issues, as well as possible negative test audience reactions. Either way, I’ll be updating this site with the latest information regarding the release, as it becomes available.
